Synopsis

Based upon the extremely popular Danish sitcom CLOWN, the movie CLOWN is domestically already one of the best selling Danish feature films ever, with an opening weekend that broke all records. Frank learns by coincidence that Mia is pregnant and that she has omitted to tell him, since she does not regard him as potential father material. Frank decides to kidnap Mia's nephew Bo for a canoe trip with the intent on showing Mia that he can be a good father. Of course, the trip turns out to be a disaster with fatal consequences. However, in the midst of the chaos, ties are bound between Bo and Frank who both learn something from the trip.

Director's Statement

The script is written in story-line form and the dialogue is improvised. I have several reasons for adhering to this principle. I am convinced that this form has given CLOWN its special shape as regards expression in acting and style; this particular play with fiction and reality which has struck a chord with the audience. Moreover, it provides the best conditions for our two main characters, Frank and Casper, who are at their best in this field. And in this field, we can get down to something unexpected and original.

CLOWN always tries to go where no one has gone before; we try to tackle problems in a different way and let Frank say what others only think. We expose Frank to extreme pressure and let him experience the development he so badly needs. The story and the players make up the best film, and that is what I focused on.

Director's Biography

Mikkel Norgaard, (b. 1974, Denmark), graduated in direction from the National Film School of Denmark 2001. Prior to this Norgaard assisted on a number of Danish feature films, and after graduating he worked with Nikolaj Arcel and Thomas Vinterberg. Norgaard directed the popular television sitcom CLOWN (2005-2009), which the film is based on. The series received the Best Comedy Award at the national TV-Award in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Norgaard is also successful with the more serious genre, directing episodes of the crime-series ANNA PIH L (2006-2008), which domestically was a huge success with high ratings and continuous placements on the Top 10-list.
